EMAIL FROM Clint 4th October 2025
I’ve just used Shellawax Cream, on a Tasmanian Blackwood bowl. It looks great. Is it usual to apply a second coat?
If the surface degraded, what do i do to repair it? (The bowl is a present to my 4 yo grandson, so I’m expecting it to be ‘used’!)
Thanks in advance.

Hello Clint

For bowls and any thing else that will be used / subject to wear and tea you ideally need to do 2-3 applications. The first application is around 90% in the wood rather than on the surface so may be damaged the 2nd and any subsequent applications are surface coatings which will give high protection against water, alcohol, heat, constant handling, etc.
For purely decorative work which won’t be used or constantly handled one application is fine.
Ideally the bowl should be used for dry foods like nuts, chips/crisps, biscuits, etc.
The finish needs 20 days to fully crosslink before throwing it into full use, after that time it will be almost as tough as a melamine bench top. Although water etc will bead up and roll of immediately.
Never put it in a dishwasher. To clean wipe out with damp cloth using warm water with a spot of dish detergent and dry immediately.
For what it’s worth Aussie Oil, Shellawax (liquid) and Glow will give a slightly tougher surface but cleaning and upkeep is the same for all.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Kind regards – Neil
